Got an asbestos roof? Remove it legally, once.
Under South Africa's Asbestos Abatement Regulations, 2020, removing or encapsulating asbestos cement roofs must be done by a registered asbestos contractor. Ours is carried out by our sister company, Indi Maintenance Services, a Registered Asbestos Contractor (Type 2) (certificate 2025RAC/CI-180, valid until 26 August 2028).
Indi quotes the asbestos work, and Roof Direct quotes and installs your new roof, so you have one point of contact throughout. You can verify any contractor's registration with the Department of Employment and Labour.

The inspection authority checks the site and issues the clearance certificate you need on record.

Re-roof from old tiles to metal sheeting, Killarney Gardens
Roof replacement
The old tiled roof was weathered and stained across every slope. We replaced it with a new grey metal roof, with new hip and ridge flashings, so the house now has a clean, watertight roof.
Bergvliet High, Bergvliet
A full roof replacement at Bergvliet High. The old asbestos cement sheets were removed by our sister company, Indi Maintenance Services, under its registration, and Roof Direct installed the new red metal roof with new ridge vents.
Commercial metal roof painting, Worcester
A large corrugated roof on a commercial building had rusted along the sheets. The rust was treated and the roof painted light grey, with the team working at heights across the roof.

The tiled roof on this Sea Point apartment block was weathered and stained along every slope, with waterproofing problems to sort out. We cleaned and restored the roof, fixed the waterproofing issues and repainted the tiles, leaving the building with a bright, well-kept tiled roof again.
Morlea Court, Vredehoek
The inside of this Vredehoek block of flats was worn, with old paint peeling off the stairs. We restored and repainted the interior throughout, including redoing the staircase and re-screeding the floors, and finished the floors and stairs in a clean red.

Does an asbestos removal contractor need to be registered in South Africa?
Yes. Removing or encapsulating asbestos cement roofs is regulated asbestos work and must be done by a contractor registered with the Department of Employment and Labour. Our asbestos work is carried out by our sister company, Indi Maintenance Services, a Registered Asbestos Contractor (Type 2) (2025RAC/CI-180, valid until 26 August 2028). Always ask any contractor for proof of registration before work starts.
Who will I deal with on an asbestos project?
Roof Direct, from start to finish. We inspect and coordinate the whole project, and quote and install your new roof. Indi quotes the asbestos work itself. The asbestos removal or encapsulation itself is performed by Indi Maintenance Services under its registration, so the plan of work and asbestos documents will carry their name. One point of contact throughout.
Do I have to remove my asbestos roof?
Not always straight away. Under the 2020 regulations, building owners must have asbestos identified and assessed, keep an inventory and plan for phasing it out. Asbestos in good condition can often be managed or encapsulated for now, while damaged or weathered sheets usually need removal. A free inspection will tell you which applies.
Can I install solar panels on an asbestos roof?
No. Drilling into asbestos sheets to mount panels releases fibres, so the asbestos roof should be replaced before solar goes on. We can manage the asbestos removal and install a new roof ready for your solar installer.
How do I know if my roof contains asbestos?
Asbestos was banned in South Africa in 2008, so buildings from before then may have asbestos cement roof sheets, gutters or fascias. You can't confirm it by eye; a sample tested by an accredited lab gives a definite answer. Until then, don't cut, drill or high-pressure clean the roof.
When is the best time to waterproof a roof in Cape Town?
Most of Cape Town's rain falls in winter, roughly May to August, so late summer and autumn are ideal for waterproofing. Leaks should still be repaired as soon as you spot them, whatever the season.

Do you offer a guarantee?
Yes. Our workmanship is guaranteed for two years on most work, including new roofs and painting, and for 1 to 4 years on waterproofing, depending on the job. Materials also carry the manufacturer's own guarantee: up to 15 years on roofing materials and up to 10 years on paint, depending on the product. The terms for your job are set out in your quote.
